Two laundry bags side by side, one holding hanging garments and one folded clothes

Dry Cleaning or Wash and Fold: Which One Do You Need?

These are not two price tiers of the same service. They are different processes, and the difference is water.

What each one actually is

Wash and fold is laundry in water, dried, folded and returned ready to put away. It is charged by weight. It suits anything that would normally go through your own machine.

Dry cleaning uses solvent instead of water and is charged per item. It suits garments that would lose their shape, shrink or bleed if soaked, and it finishes them by pressing rather than folding.

Why water matters

Water makes natural fibres swell. Wool felts and shrinks. Structured tailoring, which has canvas, padding and lining all stitched together, distorts because each layer moves differently when wet. Silk can water spot and lose its finish. Many dyes bleed.

Solvent does not swell fibre the same way, which is why it can clean a suit without wrecking its shape. The trade off is that solvent is not as good at lifting water soluble soil, which is why cotton shirts should be laundered rather than dry cleaned.

A practical split

Wash and fold: everyday cotton clothing, t shirts, underwear, socks, jeans, towels, bed linen, kitchen textiles, most children's clothing, sports kit.

Dry cleaning: suits, blazers, structured jackets, wool trousers and coats, most silk, lined dresses, ties, anything labelled dry clean only, anything pleated, anything beaded or sequinned.

Laundered and pressed, which is a third thing: cotton dress shirts. Washed in water like laundry, finished on press equipment like dry cleaning.

When the label is missing or wrong

Labels get cut out, and occasionally they are simply wrong. A few honest signals that something should not go in water:

  • It has structure that holds a shape on its own
  • It is lined
  • It is wool, silk, rayon, acetate or velvet
  • It has beading, sequins or applied trim
  • It is pleated and the pleats are pressed in rather than sewn
  • It is a colour that looks like it could bleed, particularly deep reds

When in doubt, do not guess and do not test it in the sink. A dye test on a hidden seam is a thing we can do in a moment, and a ruined garment is permanent.

You do not have to decide

This is the part worth knowing. Put everything in one bag, say you are not sure, and we sort it. Each item goes to the correct process, and the dry cleaning and the laundry come back to you separately even though they travelled together.

That removes the only genuinely difficult part of using a laundry service.
