Laundered. Water lifts body oils and deodorant residue properly, which solvent does not. Shirts that are only dry cleaned tend to grey at the collar and yellow under the arms over time.

Can I choose how much starch is used?

Yes, light, heavy or none. Heavy starch looks sharp but is abrasive over time, so it is worth deciding deliberately rather than by default.

If you wear a collared shirt five days a week, the single biggest thing you can do for your wardrobe is stop dry cleaning them.

Laundering and dry cleaning are not the same treatment

Dry cleaning uses solvent instead of water. It is the right choice for wool, structured tailoring and anything that would lose its shape when wet. It is the wrong choice for a cotton shirt.

Cotton releases body oils, sweat and deodorant residue properly in water. Solvent does not lift water soluble soil nearly as well, which is why shirts that are only ever dry cleaned start to go grey at the collar and yellow under the arms even though they keep coming back pressed. The press hides it for a while. It does not fix it.

Laundering washes the shirt in water, then finishes it on shaped press equipment. That is where the crispness comes from, and it is not something an iron at home reproduces.

Where shirts actually wear out

Collars and cuffs fail first, for two different reasons. Collars pick up oil and hairline grime from skin contact. Cuffs take abrasion against desks and car doors. Both benefit from being treated before the wash rather than pushed through with everything else.

A few things that extend shirt life more than people expect:

Send shirts in promptly. Oil oxidises and sets, and a three week old collar mark is a different job from a three day old one.
Say if you want light starch, heavy starch or none. Heavy starch looks sharp but is abrasive over time, so it is a trade you should make knowingly.
Point out a stain rather than hoping it is noticed. Telling us what caused it changes how it is treated.
Hangers, not folds, if the shirt is going straight into rotation.
